Jewish Heritage in Spain and Portugal

Miranda do Douro (W)

Miranda do Douro

Right on the border with Spain, and overlooking the Douro River (“Duero” in Spanish), this Portuguese town is located in the middle of the Douro International Natural Park in the region of Tras-os-Montes.  At the time of the expulsion, many Jews who didn’t have enough money to pay their way out of Spain escaped by swimming across the river to Miranda.

A curiosity:  Miranda do Douro and the surrounding area is the only place in Portugal where a local language has been declared co-official with Portuguese.
