Jewish Heritage in Spain and Portugal

Monzon (E)

City Profile Monz├│n, SpainThe Knights Templar helped the rulers of Aragon and Catalonia regain land from the Moors, and as a result King Alfonso I granted them land there. Monzon, was their headquarters in Spain between 1143 and 1308, when the Order was disbanded. During this period they offered their protection to the Jewish population, shielding them from pogroms and arbitrary economic and administrative measures imposed by the Aragonese kings. The imposing Templar castle overlooked the Jewish quarter, whose inhabitants enjoyed relative peace and prosperity until the expulsion in 1492.
